What It Is
The Belvedere Sant'Antonio is a panoramic square in the upper part of the old town, near Porta Catania. It sits on the opposite side of the Corso from the main belvedere at Piazza IX Aprile.
It faces the same line of sight — Etna and the Ionian Sea — but from a slightly more southerly angle. The panoramic balustrade is low and open, with no fences or gates.
It isn't a "discovery" and it isn't "hidden": it's simply off the main tourist flow, which concentrates on Piazza IX Aprile.
Why It's Worth Visiting
- The same panoramic view as Piazza IX Aprile (Etna + Ionian coast)
- Far less crowded, even in high season
- Free and always accessible
- Great for clean photos without tourists in the frame
- A perfect spot for a quiet sunset: the crowd stays at Piazza IX Aprile
- Close to Porta Catania and the San Domenico Palace (a 10-min loop)
Practical Info
- Address: Piazza Sant'Antonio, Taormina (near Porta Catania)
- Hours: always accessible (public open-air square)
- Ticket: free
- Recommended visit time: 15–30 min
- Accessibility: flat square, navigable by wheelchair and stroller. Stone paving. The balustrade is low: keep small children within reach.
- Facilities: no bar directly on the square. Bars and gelaterias 2–3 min away on Corso Umberto.
When to Go
- Sunset: the light on Etna is the same as at Piazza IX Aprile, but here you have room to photograph and breathe
- Early morning: practically empty, clean photos
- Evening: discreet lighting, calm atmosphere
- To avoid: no particularly bad time. Even in high season it stays manageable.
Honest Assessment
- It's not "secret": it's on every map and well signposted. If anyone sells it as a "hidden spot", they're exaggerating.
- The angle of the view is different from Piazza IX Aprile: slightly more to the south. Etna is still visible, but the "classic" postcard framing of Taormina is the one from Piazza IX Aprile.
- No bar on the square: if you want a coffee/aperitivo with a view, you'll need to move. At Piazza IX Aprile you have the option right there.
- The space is smaller than Piazza IX Aprile: on the rare crowded moments (local events) it fills up sooner.
An Insider Tip, but an Honest One
It's not a "hidden local spot": it's simply underrated by tour groups. Come here if:
- You want photos of the panorama without a crowd
- You want a quiet sunset without the crush
- You've already seen Piazza IX Aprile and want a less saturated alternative
Stay at Piazza IX Aprile if you want the classic "iconic" framing and the atmosphere of the town's living room.
How to Get There
- From Porta Catania: 2 min on foot
- From Piazza IX Aprile: 5 min on Corso Umberto towards Porta Catania, then a turn off
- From Porta Messina: 12 min on the Corso
You can't reach it by car (ZTL — see the ZTL page and the parking page).
