Getting around
Parking in Taormina: an honest guide to the 3 main car parks
Taormina's old town is inside a ZTL: the car has to be left outside. Lumbi is the most convenient ~€10–15/day, free shuttle included, Porta Catania is the most central but pricier, Mazzarò only makes sense if you're heading to the sea. Free parking in high season: practically non-existent.

In short
- Lumbi: the default choice for most tourists — 965 spaces, free shuttle every 15 min (6:30–00:55, Saturdays until 1:55), €2.50/h
- Porta Catania: only if you want to walk into the Corso in 2 minutes and accept paying more
- Mazzarò: only if the priority is the beach and not the old town
- Free: realistic only at Letojanni or in outlying areas, outside high season
How much does it cost to park in Taormina?
Rates vary by season (high = June–September) and type of car park. Indicative 2026 figures:
| Car park | Hourly rate | Daily rate | Shuttle | Walking distance to centre |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lumbi | €2.50/h | ~€10–15/day | Yes, free | 15–20 min uphill |
| Porta Catania | €2/h (1st hour) | up to €20/24h | No (you're already there) | 2 min to the Corso |
| Mazzarò | €3 1st hour then €2/h | charged by usage | Cable car (paid) | Centre reachable by cable car |
| Letojanni (free) | free | free | No, public bus or taxi | 15 min by car + bus |
Rate sources: ASM Taormina (municipal car-park operator). Rates may vary in high season: check the totems at the entrance.
Payment: all accept card + cash. Lumbi and Porta Catania have automatic pay machines; Mazzarò usually has a physical cashier in high season.
Lumbi car park: pros and cons
It's Taormina's main car park, run by the municipality. It's above the old town, along the SS114 towards Messina.
Pros:
- Large capacity (965 spaces over two underground levels, ground floor, an outdoor area and two above-ground levels) — rarely full outside the July–August peaks
- Free shuttle to the centre (Porta Messina) every 15–20 minutes, included in the parking price
- Lower rate than Porta Catania
- Convenient entrance if you arrive from the A18 motorway (Taormina exit, clear signage)
Cons:
- It's 15–20 minutes on foot uphill (~80 m of elevation): awkward with luggage, the elderly, small children, summer heat
- Without the shuttle (reduced hours late in the evening) the uphill walk back is demanding
- A shuttle queue is possible in high season (10–15 min wait)
When to choose it: if you spend the day in the centre, have little luggage, travel as a family with a modest fare as the priority.
Shuttle hours: first run 6:30, last 00:55 (Saturdays until 1:55), every 15 minutes. Free service. Source: ASM Taormina — Lumbi Parking.
Porta Catania car park: when it makes sense
It's at the southern end of the old town, next to Porta Catania (the pedestrian entrance to Corso Umberto).
Pros:
- 2 minutes on foot from Corso Umberto and the Cathedral
- Ideal for a quick hotel check-in if the hotel is central
- Partly covered (useful against the August sun and rain)
Cons:
- Higher rate (~€20/day)
- Capacity of 650 spaces over 5 floors — in high season often full by 10:00
- Slightly tortuous access: you arrive via the SP10 with tight bends
When to choose it: a quick stop in the centre (a few hours), heavy luggage to carry to the hotel, reduced mobility, or a short stay where it's worth paying more to be comfortable.
Mazzarò car park
On the seafront, near the lower cable car station. It's not a car park for visiting the old town: it's a car park for the beach.
Pros:
- 5 minutes on foot from Mazzarò beach and Isola Bella
- To get up to the old town there's the cable car (single ride €6, return €10, day pass €20 — details on the cable car page)
- Less crowded than Lumbi at weekends
Cons:
- To get there from the centre you have to go down (and then back up, by car or cable car)
- Combined with the cable car ticket, if you want to see the centre you pay twice
- Limited capacity: in high season it fills from 9:00 in the morning
When to choose it: your day is centred on the sea (Isola Bella, Mazzarò) and the centre is a secondary visit, or you're staying in a hotel on the coast.
Free parking in Taormina: does it exist?
Short answer: in high season (June–September), practically no. In low season, a few outlying areas, but with limitations.
Reality:
- The whole old town is a ZTL (see ZTL info)
- The blue lines on the outskirts require payment from 8:00 to 24:00 in high season
- The only realistic "free" strategy: park at Letojanni (a nearby town, ~5 km north) and take a bus or train to Taormina. It works, but reckon with the time lost
What NOT to do:
- Look for "creative" parking on the narrow streets of the centre: you risk a fine or a towing charge
- Rely on unlicensed parking attendants who ask you for "something": they have no authority to demand money for public parking, and if they contest a fine on you, you have no receipt
And the ZTL?
Taormina's old town is inside a Limited Traffic Zone monitored by cameras. If you enter without a permit, the fine arrives at your home even if you're a foreign tourist. Full details on the ZTL page.
In short: park OUTSIDE the ZTL (Lumbi, Porta Catania and Mazzarò are all outside) and reach the hotel on foot or by shuttle. If the hotel is inside the ZTL, give them your plate before arriving: the hotel will add it to the municipal whitelist.
Recommended strategy by type of traveller
Day-tripper from Catania or Messina: Lumbi + shuttle. Spend ~€10–15 and walk the bare minimum.
2–3 night stay in a central hotel: Porta Catania for check-in (1–2 hours), then move the car to Lumbi for the rest of the stay. You save ~€30–40 on the total.
Beach holiday in a hotel at Mazzarò/Isola Bella: the hotel car park if included, otherwise Mazzarò.
Family with small children and luggage: Porta Catania, even if it costs more. Avoid the climb from Lumbi with a stroller.
Traveller on a budget: free Letojanni + local Interbus bus or regional train to Taormina (~€2–3). Extra travel time ~30 min.
FAQ
Q: Can I leave the car at Lumbi overnight too? A: Yes, the car park is open 24/7. The daily rate runs until midnight; after that it renews. The shuttle, however, has reduced hours after 1:00, so the uphill walk back is demanding.
Q: Can I book parking in advance? A: No, these are free-flow car parks, first come first served. In high season it's best to arrive by 9:00 for Porta Catania, 10:00 for Lumbi.
Q: Are the car parks guarded? A: They're video-monitored but there are no physical attendants 24/7. Don't leave valuables in the car, especially in view.
Q: What changes in winter? A: Hourly rates stay similar, but many tourists opt for short stops (1–2 hours in the centre), spending less. The Lumbi shuttle runs less often off-season. Mazzarò is also less useful in winter (lidos closed, cable car on reduced hours).
