What It Is

Porta Catania is one of Taormina's medieval gates, located at the western end of Corso Umberto. On the façade you can see the Aragonese coat of arms, a trace of the period when Sicily was under the Crown of Aragon.

Beneath the gate runs provincial road 10, which connects Taormina with Castelmola and the inland. It's both a road and a pedestrian passage.

Together with Porta Messina (the opposite end of the Corso) and the Clock Tower (Porta di Mezzo), it marks out the line of the old town.

Why It's Worth Visiting

  • It's free and always visible (an urban gate, in the open air)
  • It's the natural entry point to the old town if you arrive from the Porta Catania car park or from the south
  • A good photo subject: arch, stone, coat of arms
  • A flash visit: a 5–10 minute stop, it doesn't require dedicated time

Practical Info

  • Address: western end of Corso Umberto, Taormina
  • Hours: always accessible (public urban gate)
  • Ticket: free
  • Recommended visit time: 5–10 min
  • Accessibility: flat pedestrian area on the Corso side. Outer side: there's vehicle traffic (SP10), take care.

How to Get There

  • From the Porta Catania car park: 1–2 minutes uphill on foot. It's the first thing you see.
  • From Piazza IX Aprile: 7 min along Corso Umberto heading west.
  • From Porta Messina: 15–20 min along the whole of Corso Umberto (it's the opposite end).

By car: ZTL — see the ZTL page and the parking page for the Porta Catania car park.

Honest Assessment

  • It's an urban gate, not an isolated monument to contemplate. A passing point, not a destination.
  • Road traffic passes under the arch (SP10): car noise, be careful not to linger in the middle.
  • The best photos are taken from the Corso side (pedestrian), not the outer side (road).
  • If you enter from the Porta Catania car park, you'll go through it anyway on the way in and out: no need to put it on the agenda as a separate stop.

When to Go

  • Late afternoon: warm light on the stone, less traffic
  • Evening: lit up, atmospheric
  • To combine with Piazza IX Aprile and Corso Umberto as a walking tour
