Taormina Beaches — Guide to Beaches and Access

Three main beaches near Taormina: Mazzarò 2 min by cable car, pebbles, mix of private lidos and free areas, Isola Bella nature reserve with entry fee, small free beach at the foot of the sandbar, Letojanni sandier, 25 min on foot or by bus. All reachable without a car.

Sea: you swim at your own risk

Sea conditions, currents, the seabed and the possible absence of a lifeguard can be hazardous. Swimming is at your own risk: where no lifeguard is on duty, take particular care.

In Brief

  • Crystal clear water, close to the centre → Mazzarò
  • Photos + nature, quick stop → Isola Bella
  • Sand for kids, full day → Letojanni
  • Peace and quiet, no crowds → Spisone or Villagonia
  • No car needed for any of them: cable car, local buses, coastal walk

Which Beach to Choose?

Quick decision tree based on what you're after:

If you want...Go to...Why
swimming in clear water near the centreMazzarò2 min cable car, clean sea, mix of lidos and free areas
the postcard shot + a quick swimIsola Bellaiconic, but small and crowded
a full beach day with kidsLetojannisand, gentle seabed, equipped lidos
a less touristy spotSpisone / Villagonialocal feel, inconvenient to reach, peaceful
zero budget, willing to make sacrificesfree zone at Mazzaròfree, but cramped in high season

None of the beaches require a car. Mazzarò and Isola Bella are reachable by cable car; Letojanni by local bus or coastal walk.

Mazzarò Beach

The "Taormina beach" by definition: at the foot of the village, reachable in 2 minutes by cable car.

Seabed type: pebbles (not sand). Water shoes are essential to enter the water without pain.

Layout: alternating private lidos (with sunbeds and parasols for hire) and a free public zone. The free zone is a central strip — in high season it fills up by 10:30.

Indicative lido prices: €15–30/day for sunbed + parasol in mid-season, up to €40–50 in high season at the most central lidos (ranges confirmed by price lists published by the lidos).

Facilities: bars, restaurants, kayak/SUP hire, showers in private lidos — no free showers in the public area.

How to get there:

  • Cable car from the centre (via Pirandello): 2 min, €6 one way / €10 return (non-residents) — official ASM tariffs
  • On foot: historic staircase, 30 min downhill, 45 min uphill
  • Local bus: from Taormina station or town centre
  • Car: paid car parks on the SS114, few spaces in high season

Isola Bella: Ticket and Access

Taormina's postcard islet, declared an Oriented Nature Reserve.

What it is: a small island (~1 hectare) in the bay of Mazzarò, connected to the mainland by a sandbar of sand and pebbles a few metres wide, walkable when sea level is low. There is a small public beach at the foot of the isthmus. Entry to the island itself requires a ticket.

Prices (official Parco Archeologico Naxos-Taormina tariff):

  • Small beach at the foot of the isthmus: free, but tiny and always crowded
  • Naturalistic Museum / Reserve on the island: full €4 / reduced €2 / residents €1, free on the first Sunday of the month
  • Nearby private lidos: typical range similar to Mazzarò (€15–40/day), often slightly higher for front-row lidos

Access hours: museum/reserve open every day except Monday, 9:00 until one hour before sunset; visits in groups of 15 (booking advised in high season). The beach below is always accessible except in rough weather.

Tides: the isthmus can disappear at high tide or in rough sea. Check the forecast if you need to walk across.

How to get there:

  • Cable car + 10 min walk south along the SS114 from the lower station
  • Local bus Taormina-Mazzarò-Letojanni
  • On foot via the historic staircase + coastal path (40–50 min total from Corso Umberto)

Honest assessment: visually stunning, but very small and crowded. Half a day is plenty. For a proper beach day, Mazzarò or Letojanni are the better choice.

See also Isola Bella POI page.

Letojanni Beach

The proper "full-day beach" option, 3 km north of Taormina along the coast.

Seabed type: mainly sand mixed with fine pebbles, gentle gradient. Suitable for children.

Layout: long beach, alternating lidos and large free sections. Less touristy atmosphere than Mazzarò, more of a local village feel.

Indicative lido prices: similar to Mazzarò, often slightly lower for peripheral lidos. €15–25/day in mid-season (ranges confirmed by lido price lists on social media).

Facilities: bars, ice cream shops, seafood restaurants on the seafront, supermarkets 5 min away.

How to get there:

  • On foot from the lower cable car station: ~25 min along the coastal path
  • Local bus Taormina-Letojanni: ~10–15 min, frequent Interbus services in high season (see timetables at Interbus)
  • Taxi: ~€20–25 from the centre (agree the fare before getting in)
  • Train: Letojanni station, infrequent services

Honest assessment: less photogenic than Mazzarò and Isola Bella, more practical as a beach day. If you're travelling with children or want space, it's the most rational choice.

Spisone and Other Alternatives

Minor beaches south of Mazzarò, mainly frequented by locals.

Spisone: pebbles, small access point, two lidos. Peaceful even in August.

Villagonia: near the Taormina-Giardini train station, mixed pebbles and sand, a few lidos, residential feel.

How to get there: local buses along the SS114 or by car. Walkable but not the most convenient option.

Good alternatives if you want quiet and can accept minimal facilities.

What to Bring to the Beach

Practical checklist:

  • Water shoes (essential at Mazzarò and Isola Bella, optional at Letojanni)
  • Towel (lidos provide sunbeds but not always towels)
  • High-SPF sunscreen (strong sun, sea reflection)
  • Water bottle (no drinking fountains in the free beach zone)
  • Small cash (beach bars don't always accept cards)
  • Snorkel if you like it (clear waters at Isola Bella and Mazzarò)
  • Waterproof bag (if you're going out on a kayak or SUP)

Not needed: your own parasol if you hire a lido sunbed; no need for a king-size beach towel in a crowded free area.

Private Lidos: Indicative Prices

SeasonSunbed + parasolNotes
Low (Apr, Oct)€10–15/daymany lidos closed (typical season: mid-April to end of October)
Mid (May, Jun, Sep)€15–25/dayfully open
High (Jul–Aug)€25–40/daypossible weekend surcharge
Top lidos Mazzarò/Isola Bella€40–60/dayfront row, high season

Worth booking in high season: the best lidos fill up by 10:00 without a reservation.

An afternoon slot (from 14:00) usually costs 30–40% less than a full day — useful if you want a few hours on the beach after a morning visiting the town.

Honest Assessment of Taormina's Beaches

  • The free zone at Mazzarò is cramped and crowded in high season: if you want to swim there for free, arrive by 9:30 or accept standing room only.
  • Isola Bella is visually spectacular but small: as a "beach day" it disappoints, as a photo stop it delivers.
  • Letojanni is less photogenic but the most "functional" beach in the area: space, sand, facilities, more reasonable prices.
  • Top lidos are expensive but worth it in high season: book ahead or accept the risk of finding nothing.
  • Water quality around Taormina varies by year and stretch: check the seasonal reports by Goletta Verde / Legambiente and the updated Bandiera Blu FEE Italy list for official data before planning a swim.
