What It Is
Piazza IX Aprile is the panoramic square in the middle of Corso Umberto, halfway between Porta Messina and Porta Catania. It takes its name from 9 April 1860, when Taormina rose against the Bourbons during Italian unification. The checkerboard paving is iconic in photos of Taormina, and the balustrade at the far end looks directly onto Etna and the Bay of Naxos.
Facing onto the square are:
- Church of San Giuseppe (17th century) — Baroque, with a side staircase
- Former church of Sant'Agostino — today the municipal library, with a tower bell
- Clock Tower (Porta di Mezzo) — the medieval gate that divides the Corso
Why It's Worth Visiting
- It's Taormina's central belvedere: a 180° view of Etna, the Ionian coast, Castelmola above
- It's free and always open (it never closes)
- It's kid-friendly: flat, pedestrian space, easy for strollers and tired children
- It's the natural meeting point: every itinerary passes through here
- It's perfect at sunset (light on Etna in spring/autumn) and at night (musicians, people)
Practical Info
- Address: Corso Umberto, Taormina
- Hours: always accessible (public open-air square)
- Ticket: free
- Recommended visit time: 15–30 min (longer if you stop at the bar on the square)
- Accessibility: completely flat, no steps, navigable by wheelchair and stroller. The panoramic balustrade is ~110 cm high — small children need to be lifted to see over it.
- Bar on the square: there's at least one historic one with outdoor tables. Expect tourist prices (coffee €3–4, granita €5–7). For a local breakfast, walk 50 metres down the Corso.
When to Go
- Early morning (before 10): few people, frontal light on Etna, clean photos
- Late afternoon (17–19 in winter, 18–20 in summer): warm light, lively atmosphere
- Evening: square life, street musicians, night lighting
- To avoid: 11–15 in high season, it's a funnel of tour groups
Honest Assessment
- In high season (July–August) the square is genuinely crowded. The "empty" photos you see on Instagram are taken at dawn or in low season.
- The bars on the square aren't the best place to eat — they cost more and the quality is average. Eat elsewhere, stop here only for the view.
- The official belvedere (Piazza IX Aprile) is the classic one but more crowded. For a similar view with fewer people, try Piazza Sant'Antonio (5 min on foot towards Porta Catania) — still little discovered.
How to Get There
- On foot from the bus station (Lumbi parking): 10 min downhill along Via Pirandello
- From Porta Messina: 5 min stroll on the Corso
- From Porta Catania: 7 min on the Corso in the opposite direction
You can't reach it by car (ZTL — see the ZTL page and the parking page).
