What It Is

Al Saraceno is a restaurant-pizzeria along Via Madonna della Rocca, the uphill road that leads to the Saraceno Castle and the rock-cut church of Madonna della Rocca. It has the highest terrace of any restaurant in central Taormina.

The cooking is classic Sicilian — fresh fish, meat, pasta — with wood-fired pizza as the second pillar. The real reason to come is the terrace: a 360° view over Taormina from above, with Etna to the south, the Gulf of Giardini Naxos to the east, and the old town right below you.

• The view: it's the terrace with the widest panorama in Taormina. In the evening, with the city lights below, it's hard to do better
