Taormina by the Sea — Half Day at Mazzarò and Isola Bella
Open in map

From Taormina town centre to the sea and back: cable car, pebbles, crystal-clear water, Isola Bella. All in a half day, no car needed.

Duration: 6 hours | Difficulty: easy | Suitable for: families, couples, beach lovers

Overview

An itinerary for those who want to combine Taormina and the sea in a single day. Morning: cable car down to Mazzarò, swim, visit Isola Bella. Afternoon: those wanting more beach time can take the bus to Letojanni. Return by cable car for a sunset aperitivo.

Does not include: Teatro Antico, historic centre (covered by the Taormina Essentials itinerary).

Stops

1. Cable Car Station — 15 min

When: 9:15

Walk to the cable car station along via Pirandello (10 min from Corso Umberto). Return ticket €10 (non-residents) — check current fares on the ASM website. The cable car is the fastest and most scenic way down to the sea: 2-minute descent with views over the bay.

The cable car runs roughly every 15 minutes. First morning departure around 8:00. In high season there may be queues: arrive 10–15 minutes early.

2. Mazzarò Beach — 2–3 hours

When: 9:30–12:00

At the lower station, you're already at Mazzarò. The beach is split between private lidos and a free public zone. In high season the free zone fills up quickly: arrive by 9:30 if you want space.

  • Private lidos: €15–40/day for sunbed + parasol, booking advised
  • Free zone: free, but water shoes and a thick towel are essential (pebbles)
  • Facilities: bars, restaurants, kayak/SUP hire at the lidos

Water shoes are a must: the seabed is all coarse pebbles. The water is crystal clear in the calm morning hours.

3. Isola Bella — 1.5–2 hours

When: 12:00–13:30

Walk 10 minutes south along the shore to Isola Bella. The sand and pebble isthmus is walkable when the sea is calm. Entry to the nature reserve on the island is paid: €4 full, €2 reduced.

What to do:

  • Cross the isthmus for the classic shot (best in early morning light)
  • Enter the reserve for the panoramic path (20–30 minutes)
  • Snorkel on the island's sides (calmer water on the north side)

Honest note: it's small and you'll cover it quickly. The main draw is the iconic photo and an hour in clear water.

4. Lunch — 45 min

When: 13:30–14:15

Eat at Mazzarò: restaurants and bars directly on the bay. Mid-range prices (€15–25 per dish), variable quality. Alternatively, grab a panino and water from a simpler beach bar.

5. Option: Letojanni for the Afternoon — 2 hours

When: 14:15–16:00

If you want more beach time — especially with young children — take the local bus from Mazzarò towards Letojanni (~10–15 min). Letojanni has a sandy seabed, more space, and lower prices.

See the Taormina beaches guide for a detailed comparison.

6. Cable Car Back + Sunset Aperitivo — 45 min

When: 16:00–17:00

Return to the lower station and take the cable car back up (evening closing time: check ASM website — around 20:00 in summer). Aperitivo on the Corso or at Piazza IX Aprile with views of the sunset over Etna.

Practical Tips

What to Bring

  • Water shoes (essential at Mazzarò and Isola Bella)
  • Swimwear and beach towel
  • High-SPF sunscreen
  • 1–2 litres of water (no drinking fountains in the free beach zone)
  • Cash (beach bars don't always accept cards)
  • Snorkel if you enjoy it

What to Avoid

  • ❌ Arriving at Mazzarò after 11:00 in August without a lido booking
  • ❌ Expecting sand: Mazzarò and Isola Bella are pebbles only
  • ❌ Forgetting water shoes
  • ❌ Overrating Isola Bella as a "beach day" destination — it's a stop, not a destination

With Young Children

  • Letojanni is more suitable: sand, gentle seabed, space
  • Avoid the free beach at Mazzarò with children under 5 (pebbles, crowds)
  • The cable car is pushchair-friendly (no stairs)

Last updated: 2026-06-06

Timings based on a typical day visit. In July–August, add 15–20% buffer for cable car and beach queues.

Suitable for

  • Families with children
  • Couples
  • Beach lovers
